A Running Toilet

A toilet that keeps running after it is flushed is often caused by a flapper that is not sealing at the bottom of the tank. First, remove the tank lid and check whether the chain is tangled, too tight, or holding the flapper slightly open. If the flapper looks worn, warped, or coated with buildup, turn off the water supply, flush the tank, and replace it with the correct matching flapper. A simple food-coloring test can confirm a leak: place a few drops in the tank and wait about 10 minutes—color appearing in the bowl means water is leaking past the flapper.
If water is rising into the overflow tube, the issue is more likely the fill valve or its water-level adjustment. Set the water level to roughly 1/4 inch below the top of the overflow tube; if it still will not shut off, clean or replace the fill valve. Address a running toilet promptly, since it can waste a significant amount of water over time.
